WMTA Specific Rules for Brass, Acoustic Guitar, Percussion, Strings, Woodwinds

These rules are IN ADDITION to the Rules common to all tracks. Auditions for each instrument may not be held in every District. Please contact your Local District Chair during the Fall preceding the audition date if you have students who wish to participate.
- Memorization is optional for D2/D3 Tracks; for State Track, one piece must be memorized.
- Any music used by the student must be an original copy.
- Cadenzas: Performing a cadenza is optional and not required. If a cadenza is performed it may be either student-written or a published cadenza. It is acceptable to communicate to the adjudicator via a note attached to the piece that the student is willing to be cut-off and re-started at the end of their piece in order to perform their prepared cadenza.
- Alternate instruments may be used as appropriate (e.g., clarinet instead of violin). Parts may be transposed for public domain music or with permission of the publisher. Octave adjustments are allowed.
- One selection must be with accompaniment
- If a selection was composed with an accompaniment, it must be used
- Exception: Guitar and Percussion may be entirely unaccompanied (if originally unaccompanied)
- Information about accompaniments
- Must have two original scores (one for judge, one for accompanist).
- Arrangements are allowed.
- Recorded accompaniments are not allowed.
- Information about accompanists
- No accompanists are provided by WMTA.
- Teachers may accompany their own students.
- Page-turners are allowed.
- Students may enter on more than one instrument
- If entering on two instruments in the same area (i.e. strings), different compositions must be performed.
- Points are accumulated separately for each instrument on which a student competes.
- Additional Acoustic Guitar Information
- Instrument should be an all acoustic guitar, with standard scale and nylon or steel strings.
- Finger-plucking and picking techniques are allowed.
- Repertoire may be of any idiom intended for acoustic guitar.
- Grades 1-6, pieces must be contrasting.
- Grades 7-12, pieces must be contrasting and by different composers.
- Additional Percussion Information
- Acceptable instruments include: parade drum, concert snare drum, timpani, marimba/vibraharp, multiple percussion (not the same as drum set.)
- Arrangements and transcriptions are acceptable.
- Neither popular music nor Musical Theatre arrangements are acceptable.
- Music Theory Test should be taken at student’s piano grade level.
