Overview and Timeline

WMTA VIE Competition Step-by-Step

Vocal | Instrumental | Ensembles Competition (Also Includes Keyboard Duet and All Adult Participants Including Adult Keyboard Solo)
District Round One	1. Choose your student’s track and corresponding theory level. 2. Register your student with your local District Chairperson. 3. Follow instructions about where and when your student will take their theory test. 4. Students participate in the District Round of the WMTA Competition. 5. If the student registered in the State Track and earned qualifying scores, they will advance to the State VIE Competition. The State VIE shares the WMTA Venue and dates as the WMTA Northeast Regional Keyboard Competition. Please note:  Dually qualified participants (students who have qualified for the Regional Keyboard Competition AND the State VIE Competition) will compete at the Northeast Keyboard Regional Competition for both their Keyboard solo and their VIE event.   At the District Round of the WMTA Competition, students are performing to earn points.  Each piece they perform will earn 1-5 points.  The required theory test will earn 1-5 points.
State VIE Round Two	1. Register for the Regional Competition with the Regional Chairperson. 2. Students perform the same repertoire as performed at the District Round. 3. Compete at the State VIE Competition.  4. Students will compete against students (either in their grade or similar ages), and the judge will declare place designations (such as winner, runner-up, and honorable mention). 5. The grade-level Winner will perform at a recital at the end of the competition day. 6. If the Winner is not available, the Runner-Up (if designated) may perform. 7. The Winner will earn 15 points. Runner-Up will earn 14 points. Honorable Mention will earn 13 points. Participating students (non-award winners) will earn 10 points.

TRACK	RULES & ELIGIBILITY
D2	Perform 2 pieces from memory.  -Grades 1 – 6:  Pieces must be contrasting. -Repertoire time limit = 10 minutes. -Grades 7 – 12 & Adult:  Pieces must be contrasting. -Repertoire time limit = 12 minutes -Maximum of 5 points possible for each piece. -Guardian must be present. -Not eligible for advancement to Regional or State Competition
D2 – NM	Perform 2 pieces. (memorization not required) -This track is available for piano & vocal students. -Open to students in grades 1 – 12 & Adults. -Repertoire time limit: -Grades 1 – 6 = 10 minutes -Grades 7 – 12 & Adults = 12 minutes -A page turner is allowed, but cannot be the student’s teacher. -Must have 2 original scores for both pieces. -Maximum of 4 points possible for each piece. -Pieces must be contrasting. -Guardian must be present. -Not eligible for advancement to Regional or State Competition
D3	Perform 3 pieces; two pieces must be memorized. Instrumental – Perform 3 pieces and no memorization required. -Grades 7 – 12 & Adult. -Repertoire time limit = 15 minutes. -A page-turner is allowed, but cannot be the student’s teacher. -Must have 2 original scores for the non-memorized piece. -Maximum of 5 points possible for each piece. -Pieces must be contrasting. -Guardian must be present. -Not eligible for advancement to the Regional or State Competition.
State	Perform 3 pieces from memory. Instrumental – Perform 1 piece memorized & 2 pieces non-memorized. -Grades 1 – 12 & Adult. -Repertoire time limit -Grades 1 – 3 = 10 minutes. -Grades 4 – 6 = 12 minutes. -Grades 7 – 12 & Adult = 15 minutes. -Maximum of 5 points possible for each piece. -Pieces must be contrasting and by different composers. -One piece must be by a Baroque or Classical era composer. -Guardian must be present. ADVANCEMENT Vocal | Instrumental | Ensemble:  Students who earn a minimum of 14 performance points & 4 theory points advance to the State VIE Competition. Adult Keyboard & VIE: Students who earn a minimum of 14 performance points & 4 theory points advance to the State VIE Competition.

Guidelines for choosing repertoire VIE & Keyboard

• Consult the Eligible Baroque and Classical Composers List if your track requires a piece from these eras
• Transcriptions are not allowed for solo keyboard performances
• Published compositions that reference/arrange Folk songs/Spirituals are allowed
• Compositions must be at least 16 measures long, excluding repeats
  • Two or more pieces that are less than 16 measures, but by the same composer, may be grouped as a suite to meet this requirement.
• Piano: All other arrangements are not allowed.
• Original manuscripts with no composer (“Anonymous”) are allowed
• Students may perform one or more movements from Suites and Sonatas/Sonatinas
• Students may perform any selection of variations from Theme and Variation sets
• Students may perform either the Prelude or Fugue of a set, or both
• For all repertoire, make sure the correct option is selected when registering.
• Minuet and Trio compositions must be performed in their entirety
• Vocal/Instrumental/Ensemble: Arrangements are allowed
• Musical Theater works are not allowed (except for Vocal tracks)
• Student compositions are not allowed
• Only published music is allowed
• Exceptions are for unpublished works by a composer whose other works are published; permission must be obtained by your District Chair before the application due date
• Number all measures of each piece that will be performed
• Changes to repertoire can be made only up until the application due date
• If legally downloaded music is used, it must be accompanied by the Copyright Representation and Indemnification Agreement Form
